Sts. Perpetua & Felicitas (March 6th)

Saints Perpetua and Felicitas: A Courageous Witness of Faith and Sacrifice

Introduction:

In the traditional Latin calendar, we commemorate two remarkable early martyrs of the Church, Saints Perpetua, and Felicitas. Living during the reign of Emperor Septimus Severus, these heroic women resided in Carthage, where they faced persecution for their Christian faith. Despite the concerns of St. Perpetua’s pagan father, she and St. Felicitas, along with three other catechumens, were arrested and imprisoned in a dreadful cell. Their story of martyrdom highlights their unwavering faith, even in the face of the greatest anxieties, particularly their concern for their children. Today, we draw inspiration from these holy saints as we navigate the challenges of our own time, particularly the sanctity of life and the meaning of family, as emphasized by Our Lady of Fatima.

The Trials of Imprisonment:

During their imprisonment, St. Perpetua’s father made numerous attempts to dissuade her from embracing Christianity. However, his concerns did not deter her or St. Felicitas. Together with the other prisoners, they endured the hardships of a dark, hot, and inhospitable cell. Despite the terrifying conditions, their primary worry lay not with their own fate, but with the well-being of their children. It is unimaginable how tempting it must have been for them to succumb to fear and compromise their faith for the sake of their children’s safety. Yet, these holy martyrs remained steadfast and resolute.

A Vision of True Battle:

Strengthened by their baptism in prison and guided by the Holy Spirit, St. Perpetua had a vision that revealed the true nature of their fight. While they were destined to face Rome’s ferocious beasts, her vision made it clear that their real battle was not against physical adversaries such as bears or leopards, but against the true Enemy—the devil. The martyrs understood that sin leads to true death, while dying for Christ leads to eternal life. No words from St. Perpetua’s father or any human could shake her Christian conviction as she willingly sacrificed her life for the Lord, entrusting her son to His care.

A Witness for Our Time:

Saints Perpetua and Felicitas serve as powerful examples and witnesses in our present era. As warned by Our Lady of Fatima, the errors of Russia have spread, leading to a significant distortion of the meaning and sanctity of the family. Among the various evils plaguing our world, abortion stands out as the gravest and most tragic. In moments of desperation and cornered circumstances, it can be tempting to compromise our principles and rationalize that the ends justify the means. However, this is a deceptive path. We must never resort to evil in pursuit of good, and we must resist despair.

Seeking Refuge in Faith:

Instead, let us emulate the model of Saints Perpetua and Felicitas by surrendering everything to the Lord. When anxiety and temptation arise, pushing us to sin or make compromises, let us find solace in the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It is there that we discover eternal life and the fulfillment of our deepest longings.

Conclusion:

The courageous witness of Saints Perpetua and Felicitas inspires us to stand firm in our faith, even when faced with immense challenges. Their story reminds us of the sanctity of life and the importance of upholding the true meaning of family. As we confront the errors and deceptions of our time, may we draw strength from their example and entrust ourselves to the loving embrace of Jesus and Mary. Through their intercession, may we find the courage to remain faithful, even in the most trying circumstances, and discover the abundant life that awaits us.
