Circumcision of Jesus (Jan. 1st)

The Significance of Jesus’ Circumcision: An Obedient Model for All

Introduction:

In accordance with the Abrahamic covenant and the Mosaic Law, Jesus, the Son of God, humbly underwent circumcision eight days after His birth. This act held profound symbolism and conveyed important messages to humanity. While the practice of circumcision may not hold the same significance in the present day, understanding the historical context and the teachings behind Jesus’ circumcision provides valuable insights into obedience and salvation.

A Fulfillment of the Old Law:

Jesus, being sinless and the incarnate Word of God, did not require circumcision for His own purification. However, He willingly underwent this ritual to fulfill the requirements of the Old Law and to exemplify the importance of obedience. Circumcision was designated as a sign of the Abrahamic covenant and represented participation in that covenant (Genesis 17). It served as a visible symbol of humanity’s sinfulness and the purifying effect of being in a relationship with God.

Continuity with the Old Law:

By undergoing circumcision, Jesus demonstrated that His mission was not to abolish the Old Law but to fulfill it. As a descendant of Abraham, He obediently followed the Law. However, the coming of Jesus also signaled a transformative shift in the way humanity would be joined to God’s covenant. While circumcision is no longer required to partake in the new and everlasting covenant, baptism now serves as the means by which believers are united with Christ and receive salvation.

The Significance of Jesus’ Name:

At His circumcision, Jesus was given the name “Jesus,” which means “God saves” (Luke 2:21). This naming underscores the central message of Christ’s mission—to bring salvation to humanity. It serves as a reminder that our union with Christ through faith is the source of our salvation, and it is through Him alone that we find redemption and eternal life.

The Call to Obedience and Faith:

The Feast of Jesus’ Circumcision serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of obedience and faith in our relationship with God. By placing our trust in Him, we recognize His perfect will, revealed to us through Christ and transmitted through the Church, guided by the Holy Spirit. Our commitment to steadfastly adhering to the teachings and traditions of the Church becomes paramount, particularly in times when errors and distractions threaten to lead us astray.

Responding with Humility and Devotion:

In light of Our Lady of Fatima’s warning about the spread of errors, it is crucial that we respond with humility and devotion. This response involves obediently embracing the Church’s moral teachings, actively participating in the sacraments, daily praying the Rosary, and paying due reverence to Our Blessed Mother. By doing so, we uphold the sacred teachings and traditions that have shaped the Church for millennia and remain steadfast in our faith.

Conclusion:

Jesus’ circumcision holds profound meaning beyond the act itself. It symbolizes His obedience to the Old Law, the fulfillment of the Abrahamic covenant, and the call to salvation through faith in Him. As we reflect on this significant event, let us renew our commitment to obedience, guided by the teachings of Christ and His Church. By remaining faithful and devoted, we honor the sacred traditions that have sustained believers throughout history and continue to lead us towards salvation.
