Embracing Lent: A Time of Repentance and Spiritual Combat

Introduction:

As Jesus emerged from His forty-day fast, He began His public ministry with a profound message: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:15) On this Ash Wednesday, Christ and Our Lady of Fatima call us to acknowledge our sinfulness, seeking purification through God’s grace and mercy. Lent invites us to join in the Lord’s fasting for forty days, freeing ourselves from worldly attachments and sharing in Christ’s victory. Through fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, we can overcome the challenges and temptations that arise, finding strength and wisdom in the example of Jesus and the intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The Spiritual Battle:

Just as Jesus warned in the parable of the sower, the cares of the world and an attachment to earthly riches can choke our spiritual life. Lent provides an opportunity to break free from these distractions and turn our focus on God. By generously giving to others and embracing the pains of fasting and mortification, we participate in Christ’s sacrifice, offering love for the salvation of souls. However, these spiritual exercises can be challenging, and the enemy may attempt to discourage and derail us from our Lenten resolutions. Yet, we need not fear, for we are called to engage in spiritual combat with courage and determination.

Taking Refuge in the Immaculate Heart of Mary:

In the face of temptation, we can find solace and strength by seeking refuge in the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Just as Jesus dispelled the devil’s attacks with the power of Scripture, we too can overcome temptations by anchoring ourselves in prayer. When we pray the Rosary, meditating on the lives of Jesus and Mary, we gain wisdom and fortitude to see through sinful illusions and resist temptation. Through this spiritual armor, we can navigate the Lenten journey with greater confidence and endurance.

Responding to the Call:

During this Lenten season, let us heed the call of Christ, echoing through the messages of Our Lady of Fatima. Through repentance, belief in the Gospel, and embracing the practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, we open ourselves to God’s transformative grace. In the face of spiritual combat, let us remember that our faith empowers us to persevere and emerge stronger. As we journey through Lent, may our hearts be purified, our resolve fortified, and our souls drawn closer to the divine.

Conclusion:

Lent is a sacred time of repentance, spiritual combat, and growth in holiness. As we embark on this season, inspired by Christ’s example and guided by the intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, let us embrace the call to repentance and believe in the Gospel. With prayer as our shield, fasting as our offering, and almsgiving as our act of love, we can navigate the challenges and temptations of Lent with courage and resolve. May this Lenten journey deepen our relationship with God, purify our hearts, and bring us closer to the fulfillment of His kingdom.
