St. Stephen of Hungary: A Model of Virtuous Leadership
Introduction
Over a century ago, Our Lady of Fatima warned of impending wars and political upheaval. Regrettably, history has borne witness to the accuracy of this prophecy. In these trying times, it’s easy to lose hope in the prospect of a virtuous and holy political state. However, St. Stephen of Hungary, whose feast day we celebrate in the traditional Latin calendar, offers us a shining example and a reason to persevere.
A Pagan Prince’s Transformation
St. Stephen’s journey began in the late tenth century as a pagan born to the Magyars. His father’s conversion to Christianity, initially for practical reasons, led to Stephen’s baptism. As time passed, Stephen’s love for the Lord deepened, and he valiantly fought for Christ’s Kingdom.
Rooting Out Paganism
Growing into a young prince, St. Stephen devoted his efforts to eradicating paganism among his people. As Christianity and German influence spread, some pagans revolted, and a rival sought to undo Stephen’s work. In preparation for this conflict, Stephen turned to prayer, fasting, and charity, placing his trust entirely in the Lord. Despite being outnumbered, his army emerged victorious, and St. Stephen built a monastery at the battleground to dedicate the triumph to God.
A Life of Zeal and Political Success
This theme of political success driven by religious zeal defined the remainder of St. Stephen’s life. He eventually became the first King of Hungary, playing a pivotal role in establishing numerous dioceses and monasteries. His deep love for the poor and commitment to peace marked his reign.
Lessons for Today’s Leaders
While St. Stephen’s life may appear vastly different from that of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Augustine, or the Apostles, he demonstrates that sanctity is attainable even for those in positions of political power. Our worldly possessions and status hold little importance compared to dedicating all we are and have to the Lord.
Conclusion
For both St. Stephen and all political leaders, this means tirelessly working for the betterment of society. It involves not only physical well-being but, above all, spiritual growth. As we honor St. Stephen of Hungary today, let us seek his intercession. May we pray that leaders worldwide follow his example, consecrating those under their care to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In Her Immaculate Heart, we may find refuge, healing, and peace.
