St. Margaret, Queen of Scotland (June 10th)

St. Margaret of Scotland: A Model of Holy Motherhood and Leadership

Introduction:

Often, when we encounter the lives of the saints, we may find ourselves making excuses, believing that holiness was more attainable for them due to their circumstances. We may think that the fast-paced nature of our lives or the comforts we enjoy hinder our ability to fully live up to their example. However, St. Margaret of Scotland, whom we celebrate today in the traditional Latin calendar, shatters these excuses and stands as an exceptional model of holy motherhood and leadership.

St. Margaret’s Journey:

Born an English princess in the eleventh century, St. Margaret desired to become a nun. However, due to her noble status, she accepted that this path was not meant for her. When her family fled England and encountered a shipwreck on the shores of Scotland, King Malcolm III of Scotland came to their aid. King Malcolm fell in love with Margaret and they entered into holy matrimony, making her the Queen of Scotland. As a wife, she influenced her husband with her love, fidelity, and virtue, leading him to become a more virtuous and holy man. As a queen, she played a significant role in religious reform and the construction of numerous churches. As a mother, she lovingly raised her eight children in a devout and holy environment, fostering their faith. Amidst these roles, she maintained a profound spiritual life, devoted to prayer, penance, and caring for the poor.

Emulating the Virtues of St. Margaret:

St. Margaret’s life resonates with the virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as she faithfully echoed God’s call to love. In our busy lives, faced with temptations and sorrows, we are invited by Our Lady of Fatima to seek refuge in Her heart and be transformed through Her intercession. Let us set aside time to pray the Rosary, reflecting on how the Lord calls us to love. Additionally, embracing penance and willingly embracing the Cross helps us find meaning in our sufferings and detach ourselves from the allure of worldly comforts. Finally, placing the Lord and the Blessed Mother at the center of our family life allows us to faithfully love them and experience renewal in ourselves, our families, and the world.

Conclusion:

St. Margaret of Scotland serves as an exemplary model of holy motherhood and leadership, challenging our excuses and inspiring us to embrace holiness in our own lives. Her devotion to God, her family, and the poor showcases the transformative power of grace and the profound influence one person can have. As we navigate the complexities of our lives, let us heed the invitation of Our Lady of Fatima and find solace in her heart. Through prayer, penance, and placing the Lord and the Blessed Mother at the core of our families, we can experience renewal and faithfully live out our vocations. May St. Margaret’s example guide us on our own path towards holiness.
